Mahatma Gandhi was an amazing and hugely influential figure in history. He is renowned for his beliefs and teachings in regards to civil rights, religion, education, non-violence, and the list goes on. In this analysis I will attempt to relate Gandhi’s principles to my own, grounded in the faith and teachings of Jesus Christ. In doing so I will discuss three over-arching topics specifically: social issues, money/career, and the nature of God. A huge topic that must be continually dealt with in our world is the topic of social issues, and within that category I believe education is one of, if not the single most important. Gandhi had some very specific views on education. It was his belief that all people, regardless of circumstances or social standing, had a right to basic education. The term for the education system Gandhi promoted is Nai Talim – which translates to â€Å"basic education for all†. Gandhi’s focus was on teaching practical and basic skills which could be useful at the community and village level. This is where I somewhat disagree with Gandhi’s view. I certainly see the historical reasoning for Gandhi to propose this kind of system in India; however I believe that in our world today his system is not superior to the development of highly specialized skills, beyond basic and practical skills. That small disagreement aside, Gandhi’s overall view on education does mirror my own. Education is a basic human right, and everyone should be granted this right. I believe that today more specialized education is needed than Gandhi advocated for, but our principles are completely aligned, and Gandhi’s over-arching ideas on education as a social issue can and should still be held today. As Damm (2005) states, â€Å"The end of all education should surely be service, and if a student gets an opportunity of rendering service †¦ he should consider it as a rare opportunity and treat it not as a suspension of his education but rather its complement.† (p.8) Branching out from education and social issues, the next important topic to consider in studying the life and works of Gandhi is his views on a career. In the western world we live in today the goal is simple, money. Everything comes down to money. In a western, capitalist civilization money is the key to happiness. To have a comfortable living, you must be educated and obtain a great job, along with a great salary, in order to fund a happy lifestyle. This is the reality of our world today. Based on Gandhi’s teaching and writings, he was in staunch opposition to this way of thinking. Gandhi, in his preaching, never spoke of how to better yourself or your own situation, but instead spoke of how to better others and help them. Dear (2005) quotes Gandhi, â€Å"If we would listen to the voice of God, I assure you we would hear God say that we are taking God’s name in vain if we do not think of the poor and help them†¦Try to identify yourself with the poor by actually helping them.† (p. 335) In examining the words of Gandhi, exemplified by the quote above, his thoughts on money and a career become clear. His total and complete focus on others, with complete and total disregard for himself and his own happiness and comfort in life, is nothing short of Jesus-like. Like Christ, Gandhi sought no reward for helping others. He looked for no personal gratification for his efforts, thus shunning the westernized â€Å"me-first† view that is the norm of our society today. On this, at least in theory if not in complete practice, Gandhi and I are in total agreement. My goal in my future career as a teacher is to help people. I want to educate. I am not looking to become overly wealthy; instead I am looking only to obtain my happiness through helping others. While not going to the extremes that Gandhi did, seeing as I do seek a paycheck for my services, I do still believe I can model myself after his teachings and beliefs on money and a career. Like him I aim to help others, not to just seek the best opportunity for myself to gain riches and wealth. Gandhi was not a Christian, but a practicing Hindu; however Gandhi surprisingly had a very Christian-like view on the nature of God. Certainly there are tenants of Hinduism that I, as a Christian, do not accept; but Gandhi through his life, works, and writings comes across to me as a great Christian teacher, regardless of his stated religion. Gandhi even addressed Christians directly at times. Dear (2005) again quotes Gandhi, â€Å"I suggest that all Christians must begin to live more like Jesus Christ† (p. 335) I have already outlined how Gandhi was Christ-like in his own actions, and also how he exemplified the Christian ideal of selflessness. Non-violence was also a major tenant of Gandhi’s teachings, much the same as it is a major tenant in Christianity through the teachings of Jesus. Following strictly to the teachings of Christ in the bible, Gandhi’s was a proponent of strict non-violence, not matter the situation. Howard (2011) writes, â€Å"Johnson recapitulates Gandhi’s thought that ‘counter-terrorism stimulates terrorism . . . each side justifying their violence as a necessary response to the terrorism of the other side’ (p. 109). He emphasizes the need to explore alternative approaches to confront violence and insecurity in the twenty-first century.† (p. 234) Here, I must disagree with Gandhi’s view. This quote shows that, just like Jesus, Gandhi was in favor of a strict non-violence policy. In today’s world, I just cannot agree with that. While non-violence is a great philosophy, and one I do agree with in the majority of situations, I do believe that in certain situations violence is necessary. Cases of terrorism are a perfect example. While Gandhi encourages seeking of a different solution than retaliatory violence, I see it differently. Regardless of the justification from each side, a terrorist attack on innocent and defenseless people, like that of Sept. 11, 2001 in New York, are a situation where non-violence as a practice must be set aside. Violence may beget more violence in the short run; however sitting idle will accomplish nothing at all in those types of situations. Non-violence is a great philosophy, one that I as a Christian support whole-heartedly, but my view is that exceptions must be made to every rule when the circumstances are extreme enough. While not being a Christian himself, Gandhi’s ideals and principle strongly coincide with those of Jesus. Christians today can learn a lot from the philosophy and teachings of Gandhi, and proudly take him as a role model. As a Christian, I have done exactly that through my research for this assignment. The Philosophy of Honesty What does it take to be honest? Although often invoked, the concept of honesty is quite tricky to characterize. Taking a closer look, it is a cognate notion of authenticity. Heres why. Truth and Honesty While it may be tempting to define honesty as speaking the truth and abiding by the rules, this is an overly-simplistic view of a complex concept. Telling the truth- the whole truth- is at times practically and theoretically impossible as well as morally not required or even wrong. Suppose your new partner asks you to be honest about what you have done over the past week, when you were apart: does this mean you’ll have to tell everything you have done? Not only you may not have enough time and you won’t recall all details, but is everything really relevant? Should you also talk about the surprise party you are organizing for next week for your partner? The relationship between honesty and truth is much more subtle. What is truth about a person, anyway? When a judge asks a witness to tell the truth about what happened that day, the request cannot be for any particular whatsoever but only for relevant ones. Who is to say which particulars are relevant? Honesty and the Self Those few remarks should be sufficient in clearing up the intricate relationship there is between honesty and the construction of a self. Being honest involves the capacity to select, in a way that is context-sensitive, certain particulars about our lives. At the very least honesty requires an understanding of how our actions do or do not fit within rules and expectations of the Other- where the latter stands for any person we feel obliged to report to, including ourselves. Honesty and Authenticity But theres to the relationship between honesty and the self. Have you been honest with yourself? That is indeed a major question, discussed not only by figures such as Plato and Kierkegaard, but also in David Hume’s Philosophical Honesty. To be honest to ourselves seems to be a key part of what it takes to be authentic: only those who can face themselves, in all their own peculiarity, seem to be capable of developing a persona that is true to herself- hence, authentic. Honesty as a Disposition If honesty is not telling the whole truth, what is it? One way to characterize it, typically adopted in virtue ethics (that school of ethics that developed from Aristotle’s teachings), makes honesty into a disposition. Here goes my rendering of the topic. A person is honest when he or she possesses the disposition to face the Other by making explicit all those details that are relevant to the conversation at issue. The disposition in question is a tendency which has been cultivated over time. That is, an honest person is one that has developed the habit of bringing forward to the Other all those details of his or her life that seem relevant in conversation with the Other. The ability to discern that which is relevant is part of honesty and is, if course, quite a complex skill to possess. This focus on greed encourages Tambu to grow disdainful of her original family structure and presents the home as something negative. We see that as the characters develop so do their homes, by branching out and their ultimate structure being affected also. Both Tambu and Jeanette are deeply affected by the moral codes that their families try to instil in them. Neither enjoy an ideal home; furthermore, the experiences that their homes present leave them more than wary of their families. Yet the importance of home and family remains the same, it helps to mould you into the person you become whether it is a happy experience or not. The Donor Services Department is an organization that seeks out sponsors to help with the funding of underprivileged families. They must do their best to maintain a constant flow of donors as well as keep track of their work. There are various components that keep this system at bay and it must be kept under control especially since they are planning on expanding. Prior to their expansion, the Executive Director of Donor Services, Sam Wilson, hired a consultant, Joanna Reed, to help him with the restructure of the company internally. There were issues and concerns on who should run the department and how the employees’ work would be delegated. Through Joanna’s observations and the various instances throughout the case analysis it is apparent that there is not a strong leader in the department. The employees’ work is also suffering from lack of supervision and training. The vertical structure that is illustrated for this company is not working for them. Employee morale is also suffering greatly because of this and is causing them to not stay on task. Recommendations on appointing the proper supervisor and the restructuring of this company will surely help it expand. Once there is a clear vision and roles are more defined the Donor Services Department is likely to improve. Employees will be willing to perform their duties assigned with ease and with the proper feedback can excel even more. Problems Identifications The Donor and Community Services Departments are rapidly growing and it is apparent that this is starting to have a large impact on the deterioration of employee morale. The lack of supervision, training and disbursement of work is causing the company to not perform at its best. The many factors that contribute to these issues can easily be solved if proper action takes place. The absence of a strong supervisor in the Donor Services Department is the main reason as to why the department is performing so poorly. The company has a vertical structure, which does not work in their favor. Jose Barriga, who is the head of this department, as well as Community Services, does not spend enough time there. He will occasionally stop in on a weekly basis and check the employees’ daily production figures. He does not give any sort of feedback, which can make the employees feel as though they are performing well, when in reality this is not the case. Jose appointed Elena  as the department supervisor, but she does not have a strong skill set to be a supervisor. She does not enforce any sort of order in the department, which causes the employees to not stay on task. It appears the hierarchy of the company is more vertical, but the linkage is not strong because Elena and Jose do not communicate about the behavior and performance of the employees. They have not come to a problem consensus, which would help out the current situation. The consultant Joanna Reed also observed that the employees have very little training in the various tasks the department performs. They do not have any sort of direction or true knowledge on what they are assigned to do. As mentioned before there is no sort of feedback, which only leads the company to become disorganized. In addition to not having proper training, several of the employees are not even able to use the skills that they were told are vital to their positions. There are six translators in the department, but only one employee named Magdalena is able to use her English speaking skills. The others are busy working on tasks that leave them a lot free time during the day, while others are have an overwhelming workload. One translator is assigned the mundane task of preparing files for new clients and doing the filing for all the departments. She is not able to use her English speaking skills or show any other valuable skills that she may possess. Solutions and Recommendations The donor services needs to better commit themselves to their department. The case touched on how two supervisors both seemed to concentrate more on the community services side of the organization, while leaving Joanna to fend for herself on the supervisor of donor services side of things. The management in this organization needs to be better spread out amongst all sides of the organization. Another idea to consider is that Joanna needs to have her role defined a little more clearly within the company. She is unsure what kind of authority she has over the translators, and the translators don’t respect her very much. If her role was better defined and she was given a range of bureaucratic policies she could enforce on the translators that would make the entire department run more smoothly, and the translators would understand that they need to respect Joanna and if not action will definitely be taken against them. An overhaul in the bureaucratic policies in the donor services department is something the  organization should consider. Right now there is no clear job definition for anyone in the donor services department, so it has become a free for all about what gets accomplished within the department. There needs to be a clear set of visions, goals, rules, and policies to give the department something they can follow, and aim for success. The new bureaucratic policies will also alleviate some of the trouble from the perspective of Joanna. The translators will have a better understanding of what will be expected of them if there is a clear set of goals and policies set in place for the workers to refer to. The donor services organization should also consider establishing a more mechanistic design approach to their department. A mechanistic design is an organization defined by clear goals, rules procedures, a clear authority, and centralized decision making. The donor services department is not succeeding by their existing hands off approach, so they need to change to a mechanistic approach in order to see better results. Mechanistic design has been proven to be successful in other organizations that have a routine job, like the translators do in this case. So this change in the design in something that could bring great success for the entire department. Bringing in a scorecard to the donor services department is an idea the organization should definitely consider. The case touched on how their is now real grade or measurement for the translators, so they don’t have feedback on their work. If there was a quarterly review or scorecard out in place by the management the translators would be able to get feedback and ideas of what they’re doing right and what they can improve on. Feedback is always important to any career and I think in this case it would help out the entire organization if the translators had a clear understanding of the management involved and feedback that would he given. Another recommendation is the possibility of bringing in a new employee who can work with Joanna to supervise the donor services translators. Both of the existing management in place seek to concentrate more on the community side, so if they don’t want to become more involved in this aspect than the organization needs to bring in someone who is bilingual and has management skills. This new person will bring in their skills to establish a bureaucracy amongst the translators, and work with Joanna to teach her the knowledge to become a better supervisor on her own in the future. Right now it seems like Joanna is not equipped enough to run the  department, but if she could learn from someone else she could eventually develop the skills needed. The importance work the workers knowledge and being properly trained is important to any good organization. This organization may also considering retraining their donor services translators. It seems that all of the current employees have started in the organization at different times, and they all have different background training. If the organization dedicates some time to come up with a standard set of training skills for all the translators it will in turn bring a common understanding of what is known and expected from each donor translator. This training will set a standard for the organization that all employees can look to when they have questions or concerns. The donor services department has some bright employees and can be a strong department within the organization. If they become more committed to giving feedback, establish a stronger bureaucracy, and consider adding some additional management in place they could be a very successful and promising department within the organization. Conclusion After the analysis by Joanna it seems like The Donor Services Department is part of a strong organization that is doing a lot of good for the less fortunate, but unfortunately they have come on some tough times. With the supervisors both concentrating more on the community services side of the organization and leaving the donor services department to be run by undertrained Elena it has caused some issues. The organization could bounce back for this successfully by recommiting themselves to the donor services. They can do this by bringing one of the two existing supervisors over to manage the donor services on a more immediate level. They can also establish a bureaucracy amongst the department so everyone has a clear understanding of the standard set of rules and procedures, as well as the vision for the organization. If neither supervisor is willing to move over to the donor services department than they need to consider hiring an outside source to monitor the translators in the depa rtment. They need someone who is bilingual and could give feedback and evaluate the translators. These small changes will go a long way in getting the donor services department back on track to helping the less fortunate.
